Physiotherapy
Tension or tenderness of the pelvic floor muscles can be associated with endometriosis and can contribute to painful sex.
Physiotherapy provided by a pelvic health physiotherapist usually includes exercises and other instructions to teach how to relax the pelvic floor muscles. This can help reduce tension of these muscles.
By relaxing the pelvic floor muscles, physiotherapy can help reduce pain during sex and improve sexual function.
Pelvic health physiotherapy is a good addition to your pain management plan.
Surgery
The decision to have surgery is made in consultation with a gynecologic surgeon and depends on the kind of endometriosis you have and your treatment priorities.
Surgery to remove endometriosis may improve your pain and sexual quality of life.
Laparoscopic surgery is a low-risk procedure where the surgeon operates through tiny (1cm) incisions in the abdomen. Through this procedure, the surgeon can remove your endometriosis.
Surgery is an alternative treatment for those who are experiencing pain but are also trying to get pregnant (since hormonal medications prevent pregnancy).
Management of endometriosis is usually done by hormonal therapy and/or surgery. Either option can help manage your pain. In addition, there is now evidence that other treatments (e.g. physiotherapy and psychological therapy) can also be effective for endometriosis pain.
